Dr Thorne was born and raised in Salt Lake City where his initial interest in medicine was fueled by his father’s successful cardiology practice. After graduating from the University of Utah he continued in medical school in Salt Lake City, finishing in 1978 when he was honored with membership in Alpha Omega Alpha.

After completing his internship in Los Angeles, he decided to pursue a cardiac surgical career, returning to Salt Lake for his surgical and cardiothoracic residency training. He subsequently underwent additional pediatric cardiac surgical instruction at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dr Thorne has been in private practice cardiothoracic surgery in Salt Lake City since 1985 working primarily at St Marks Hospital. He is board certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. He has been a member of the American College of Surgeons since 1990.

Dr. Thorne performs coronary artery bypass grafting and aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement as well as thoracic surgical procedures involving the lung, esophagus, diaphragm, and chest wall. He works hard to provide his patients with an excellent technical result from each and every surgical procedure.
